Do you believe in the concept of "safe space"?

We often hear about the expression "safe space", but what is it exactly?

In intervention, "safe space" refers to a place where people are supposed to feel safe and can express themselves without fear of being judged. The key word here is "supposed." It's a beautiful and caring concept, but I personally do not agree with the notion of "safe space" as it is usually presented to us. Not at all. Let me explain why.

My office is a "safe space", this group is a "safe place". Is it really?

How many times have you genuinely felt comfortable sharing your struggles and challenges with someone you've just met? Probably not that often. And yet, that is exactly what is expected of you when you consult a physical and/or mental health professional. As if that person's office should automatically be synonymous with a "safe space" for you.

As a Human relations therapist, it doesn't matter how many times I tell you that my office is a "safe space" for you, the truth is it might not be. Not at the beginning of our meetings, anyway!

Wondering why?

Simply because I'm not the one who will determine when you feel confident enough in my presence to openly share your struggles and challenges with me. That will be entirely up to you!

A "safe space" isn't a physical location.

A "safe space" doesn't exist until you, yourself, feel safe in the presence of other people.

A "safe space" is created whenever you want it to!
